BTEC Level 2 Diploma in IT: Unit 2 – Working in the IT Industry

By Calvin Pereanu, Level 2 Diploma in IT student, 2012

Working in the IT Industry is a half unit, which goes hand in hand with Communicating in the IT Industry to make a complete unit.  When you read the name it does sound as if the unit is going to be boring but in fact it is really important if you want a career in the IT Industry.

What will you learn? First and foremost this unit looks at the qualities that people need in order to become IT practitioners or professionals.  You will always need your specialist IT knowledge, but employers are looking more and more for people with skills that can allow them to work efficiently within an IT organisation - and that means a lot more than just being a good techie these days.

When you are doing this unit you will look at the technical knowledge you will need, such as working procedures and health and safety. However, you will also realise how important other skills are, such as team work, time management and your ability to plan.

Attitudes are also important – so if you are determined, tolerant, dependable and confident you will find why and how these skills are important in the IT Industry.

You will also get to learn about common jobs in the IT Industry, such as network management, web design and manufacturing.  This is really useful because when you are studying you might not have decided what you want to do in the future. This unit will help you decide, hopefully!
